To commemorate my reading of Andrew Roberts masterful -- and long -- biography, Churchill: Walking with Destiny (Penguin Books, 2019), I painted a portrait of this great and eccentric leader who encouraged and emboldened the United Kingdom to ultimately win World War II. This is from a 1947 photo of Churchill flashing his trademark victory sign. He is wearing the uniform of a Honorary Air Commodore in the Royal Air Force (which he himself as Air Minister established in 1919) and the flying badge of the RAF, which he was awarded on 1 April 1943. Behind Churchill are sepia images of members of the armed services -- army, RAF, nurses, sailors, and the British Indian Army of volunteers. 210210, Watercolor, 14" x 10". |
